Larry, we see a wire nut in your picture. A common way to connect wires is to slide a short length of shrink wrap over one of the wires, make the connection with a butt connector then slide the shrink wrap over the splice and shrink it with a heat gun or you can use liquid tape to seal the butt connector and protect it from moisture. You need to protect any connections from mosture/corrosion.

Time to do some Google research larry. PO of your boat used house hold wire nuts to make wire splices instead of butt splices. If you look at the pic Orange thing wire nut ,yellow thing butt.

Yellow does not equal 'butt'... the colour of the connector depends on the wire size. I saw the Marr connector in Larry's pic yesterday but thought I would just wait and see how long it took for someone to jump on him. And I must say I am disappointed.... you guys are slowin' down!!!
Larry : Marr connectors can easily fall off, plus you can get water (or other moisture) in them causing corrosion, which causes bigger issues. Connecting two wires together in the marine environment should normally be done using butt connectors - essentially both wires get inserted into a tube and then crimped together, PLUS heat shrink over top to protect the exposed wire from moisture and corrosion. And that is heat shrink tubing... not a crapload of electrical tape....
Also, try not to patch wires together ... if you have a long run, use one long piece of wire (don't hack 4 short pieces together)...

And who said yellow equaled butt ? I just pointed out he had a yellow one right there. And no ones jumping on him , I figured he didn't know, so I pointed it out.
Larry if you change them out the numbers on the butt splice is the wire size it goes to.
